What You Need to Know:

Important Enrollment Information:

This is a mandatory enrollment for Cigna healthcare. Effective January 1, 2021, there will be new Cigna Healthcare plans offered: Cigna OAP High, OAP Standard and SureFit. Therefore, if you do not make a healthcare election during the enrollment period, the following will occur:

  • Your and your dependent’s current Cigna healthcare coverage will terminate on December 31, 2020.
  • If you are currently declining healthcare coverage, your opt-out election will terminate on December 31, 2020.
  • If you are being deducted the spouse/domestic partner annual surcharge, the deductions will terminate December 31, 2020.
  • You will be automatically auto-assigned to the Cigna SureFit healthcare plan, which will be the free Board-paid option for all full-time benefits eligible employees.
    • Selection of a Primary Care Physician (PCP) is required at the time of enrollment. If a PCP is not selected, Cigna will assign you a participating provider based on your zip code.
    • You must live in the tri-county (Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach) service area.
  • If you are currently enrolled in Flexible Benefits, those benefits will continue for the 2021 plan year.
  • If you are currently enrolled in Medical FSA and/or Dependent Care FSA, those benefits will continue for the 2021 plan year.

NEW HIRES ON OR AFTER 10/4/2020:

Due to Covid-19 M-DCPS took the following position:

  • Waived the 90-day waiting period to provide all full-time benefits eligible employees’ healthcare coverage.
  • Board-paid healthcare coverage, Basic Life and Short-term Disability benefits became effective as of your date of hire.
  • Waived the 90-day waiting period to enroll your eligible dependents in healthcare coverage.

The 90-day waiting period remains in place to enroll for Flexible Benefits through the Employee Portal. Therefore, at this time, you are only able to choose any of the healthcare options available to you and your dependents. You will received an email to your dade schools email address providing instructions on how to enroll for Flexible Benefits and provide you with your enrollment deadline.

Additional Information

Benefits Salary:

Benefits salary is defined by each union’s salary schedule and it is equal to the employee’s annual base salary.

Benefits salaries will be updated to meet current salary levels and will be determined for all employees annually on June 30th of each year.

Benefits salary determines:

  • Employee & dependent healthcare premium contribution
  • Board paid Life Insurance amount (amount is determined by your bargaining unit contract)
  • Disability enrollment eligibility

Salary Band:

Salary bands determines the Board contribution and the employee’s per pay deduction for employee and dependent healthcare cost.

Salary bands will be reviewed for indexing on a cycle of a three-year term based upon an average of most recently published Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Core Benefits:

Health Insurance (Board-paid): Following a 90-calendar day waiting period, all full-time benefits-eligible employees will be eligible for Board-paid healthcare (Cigna SureFit plan (employee-only)). Coverage will be effective on the 91st day. You will be able to enroll in a plan of your choice during your New Hire enrollment. Employees and their eligible dependent(s) must be covered under the same healthcare plan.

NOTE: as a result of COVID19, this waiting period has been waived and your healthcare plan is effective as of date of hire.

CignaSureFit– Free Employee-only Option

  • Referrals are needed
  • Selection of a Primary Care Physician (PCP) is required at the time of enrollment. If a PCP is not selected, Cigna will assign you a participating provider based on your zip code.
  • You must live in the tri-county (Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach) service area.

Life Insurance (Board-paid): Following a 90-calendar day waiting period, all full-time employees receive one time their annual base salary rounded up to the next $1,000. Coverage will be effective on the 91st day. Administrators and Confidential Exempt employees receive two times their annual base salary. The minimum benefit for employees represented by AFSCME is $10,000. Additional life insurance may be purchased through payroll deduction to bring maximum benefits to an additional one times the amount provided by the School Board. You will be eligible to increase your coverage to a maximum of fives times the annual base salary after the first year of participation in the optional life program. Evidence of Insurability will be required for any increases in coverage. Standard Short-Term Disability (STD) (Board-paid): Following a 90-calendar day waiting period, all full-time benefits eligible employees are provided STD coverage that pays 60% of their weekly earnings. Coverage will be effective on the 91st day. If you do not elect to upgrade your STD plan at the time of hire, you will be subject to Evidence Of Insurability (EOI) when you decide to purchase an upgrade during the open enrollment period.

Declination of Healthcare:

Declination of Healthcare Coverage (OPT-OUT) ProvisionFollowing a 90-calendar day waiting period, employees that decline healthcare coverage, will receive $100 per month paid bi-weekly through the payroll system based on their deduction pay schedule, which is taxable income. You will be required to provide proof of other group or state-funded program coverage.

Your Benefits Salary:

Benefits Salary will be updated to meet current salary levels and will be determined for all employees annually on June 30 of each year.

  • Employee and dependent’s healthcare premium contribution.
  • Board-paid life insurance amount.
